Tax Forms are Coming for Your Health Insurance Clients

Author: Bill Hansen

Your clients who were enrolled into qualified health plans in 2015 will begin to receive important tax forms on or before January 31st.  Those that enrolled into marketplace plans will receive IRS Form 1095-A.  Included with this form will be a cover sheet that explains consumers must file a 2015 federal income tax return if a member of the household received advance payments of the premium tax credit (APTC) in 2015, and how to use the Form 1095-A.  View the cover sheet here.

Clients who enrolled into qualified health plans outside of the Health Insurance Marketplace (off marketplace) will receive IRS Form 1095-B, which is a statement from your health insurance company verifying the members have insurance coverage that meets ACA requirements and are qualified health plans.  Additional information can be found here.

People covered by employer sponsored plans will received IRS Form 1095-C, which provides details about the plan.  Instructions for forms can be found here.

While you may share information with your clients about the Advance Premium Tax Credit reconciliation process and the forms they will receive, it is important that agents and brokers do not provide any tax filing advice or answer any tax filing questions. Please refer clients seeking advice regarding their personal situations to tax professionals for assistance.
